Dia de la Raza

The Puyallup School District, Broadway Center for Performing Arts, and the Karshner Museum and Center for Culture & Arts are proud to present Dia de la Raza: A Festival of Latino Cultures, on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

This free event features music, art, and dancing all within the beautiful Karshner Center.  For the 2015-16 year, the Karshner Center is boasting FIVE new exhibits!

This Culture & Arts Festival is the first in a series of six, and is directly aligned to our mission statement, which includes the following:

As a Center for Culture & Arts, we wish to enhance cultural awareness and promote cultural competency.  We wish to build a culturally responsive learning community through creative educational programs offered for learners of all ages.

Dia de la Raza at the Karshner Center will begin at noon on Saturday, October 24.  The day will include Ballet Folkliorico dance lessons taught by professional dancers from Bailadores de Bronce, Washington’s premier dance company of Mexican dance.

In addition, there will be art projects for children and families, including:

  • Amate bark painting
  • Papel Picado-paper cut banners
  • Huichol-inspired yarn painting

Music will be provided by Pachanga Alert!, a lively quintet performing music from a variety of Latin American countries featuring guitars, bass, strings, and percussion.

The PBS series, Latino Americans, is a landmark six-hour documentary featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos and more than 500 years of history.  Participants will see a screening of one of these episodes with commentary by Antonio Gomez, who worked on the series during its creation.

To compliment the dance, music, making of art, and study of history, we have invited area food trucks to be nearby providing authentic Mexican food.

This full afternoon of free activity is brought to the Puyallup community in part by grants from the Washington State Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Humanities Washington.
